About the Brand: Botánica Cimarrón
Botánica Cimarrón is the queer future of Caribbean folk healing. For the revolutionaries of the world, we create powerful plant medicines and spiritual tools. Our products are crafted with love and ceremony in small batches by our 2-Spirit Afro Taino founder Catherine Feliz (they/them). We are currently based in Los Angeles, California, occupied Tongva Land. All of our ingredients are 100% organic, and we are working to source 100% of our plant materials from regenerative farms.
Meet the Founder: Catherine Feliz
Cimarrón is the Spanish word for maroons, meaning escaped slaves. My ancestors in Dominican Republic were enslaved Africans and Tainos who escaped into the Bahoruco mountains to establish their own sovereign community. I exist today because of their bravery, vision, and solidarity. Botánica Cimarrón's mission is true freedom.
I was born and raised in Lenapehoking Lands, New York City where I started making medicine with local plants for shapeshifters, changemakers, and all the freaks I loved. At 19, I moved to Siskiyou mountains of Karuk Country, California and that’s where I started to deeply listen to the spirits of the land. Living on a permaculture-based homestead, I began to really slow down and nurture intimate relationships with individual plants.
My community-based herbalism practice is rooted in my direct experiences, trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and the political frameworks of decolonization, abolition feminism, indigenous sovereignty, and black liberation. And if I’m completely honest, a romantic Leo heart that yearns to express our beauty.
Outside of Botanica Cimarron, I am also a practicing artist and founding member of Abuela Taught Me , an Afro-Taino 2spirit educational space, and Homecoming, a QTBIPOC radical care collective.
